RAC Kennel Technician
Rockwall Adoption Center is seeking a compassionate, dependable Kennel Technician to help care for the animals in our shelter. This position plays a vital role in ensuring every animal receives proper daily care while maintaining a clean, safe, and humane environment.
Kennel Technicians are responsible for feeding, cleaning, monitoring animal health, and assisting visitors who are searching for lost pets or looking to adopt. This role requires individuals who are hardworking, attentive to detail, and comfortable working with animals of all sizes and temperaments.
Responsibilities
Maintain kennels and outdoor areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
Feed and provide fresh water to animals according to daily schedules.
Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral changes.
Safely handle animals, including those that may be fearful or reactive.
Assist members of the public searching for lost pets or interested in adoption.
Report sick or injured animals to the Shelter Manager.
Maintain written records regarding animal care, health observations, and needs.
Monitor kennel supply levels and notify management when items are running low.
Perform additional duties as assigned while working independently or as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic knowledge of animal care, health, and disease recognition.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work professionally with coworkers and the public.
Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
Requirements
Valid driver’s license required prior to employment.
Must pass a criminal background check verifying:
No felony convictions
No animal cruelty convictions
Work Environment
This position involves working both indoors and outdoors in a shelter environment and may include exposure to:
Heat and cold temperatures
Wet or humid conditions
Dust, dirt, pollen, and strong odors
Animal waste and cleaning chemicals
Loud noise levels and machinery
Animals that may be fearful, stressed, or unpredictable
This role is physically demanding and requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and cleaning for extended periods of time.
Schedule
Working Hours May Include:
Monday – Friday
• 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Saturday
• 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday
• 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM or 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (rotating)
Although the shelter is closed to the public on Sundays and major holidays, staff are required to work these days to ensure the animals receive proper care and attention.
Public Hours
Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Sunday: Closed to the public
Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours per week) with a rotating weekly schedule
Pay: $14.00 – $16.00 per hour (pay will be based on experience)
